Niwaki Kenzan Flower Frog

A Niwaki Kenzan is a brilliant alternative to floral foam for arranging flowers and foliage. Originally used for ikebana, these sturdy little flower frogs are equally useful for more relaxed Western-style arrangements - no floral foam required.

The closely packed brass pins are strong enough to hold woody stems as well as softer green stems and grasses, allowing you to position individual stems exactly where you want them. For larger woody stems, make a couple of small criss-cross cuts into the base first to help the stem settle onto the pins.

You can follow the disciplined approach of traditional ikebana schools such as Ohara and Ikenobo, or completely head off-piste and make your own thing. There are no arrangement police.

Place the Kenzan in a shallow saucer, bowl or dish, add water and top it up daily. A rubber base is included to help protect the vessel and keep the Kenzan in place.

There's also a handy straightener for putting any bent pins back into shape.

How to use

• Position the Kenzan in a shallow dish or vase.
• Push flower, foliage or grass stems onto the pins at the angle you want.
• For larger woody stems, make small criss-cross cuts into the base to help them fit onto the pins.
• Add water to the dish and top up daily.
• Use the included straightener to straighten any pins that become bent.
